Small plastic extrudes: Overview
Raw plastic is melted and created in the process of plastic extrusion. This process manufactures thermoplastic coatings, fencing, deck railings, plastic sheeting and filming, wire insulation, window frames, tubing and weather-stripping. It is used in large scale for reproducing and recycling plastic waste or raw materials such as polystyrene, nylon, polypropylene and polythene. It is a continuous process where thermoplastic material in extruder is transformed into a fluid using heat. The fluid is then forced through a die opening where it will be shaped first and cooled down into the solid form again. Process of extrusion is explained below in the simplest form:
· Thermoplastic is fed to the barrel from the hopper. What is hopper? It is a vacuum which can be fed manually or automatically to the feed barrel.
· The barrel is driven forward by the circular rotation of the screw.
· The feedstock melts as the rotating screw is dragged forward. This moment is also called as drag flow.
· It causes the thermoplastic molecules to slide over each other which melts the material.
· Heating bands on the external side provide additional heat to the barrel bringing the material to its final temperature.
· There are two processes in extrusion such as profile extrusion and blown film extrusion.
The Profile extrusion:
It is a horizontal process used to make long shapes and it is extruded into a longer cooling tank filled with water.
The water cools and solidifies the extruded plastic at the end of the cooling tank.
The profile is pulled away from the die a controlled speed. As it is pulled, the cutter shears it into the length required for further procedure.
Profile extrusion converts the plastic into T Section, U section, square section, I section, L section and circular section.
The blown film extrusion:
In this process it uses an extruder to pump the molten plastic vertically upwards through a die having the annular opening according to their preferences.
It forms a tubular film which is filled with air. The tube expands out into a bubble.
The tubular bubble cools down when it is pulled upwards. The bubble if flattened in frame which later is pulled through the rolls. What are rolls? They are commonly referred as nip rolls; they maintain the tension on the flattened plastic as it cools down.
